Today, we’re making Chinese Beef and Broccoli Rice (芥蓝牛肉菜饭) — a comforting one-wok meal that’s quick, hearty, and full of flavor. This dish looks like fried rice but it is not. It is called Caifan (菜饭) in Chinese — literally “vegetable rice,” made with freshly cooked rice mixed with tender beef, crisp gailan, and a savory blend of sauces. Every grain of rice soaks up the rich umami flavor, making it incredibly satisfying without being greasy.
It’s one of my go-to meals when I want something delicious but don’t feel like spending too much time in the kitchen. Simple ingredients, quick to make, and absolutely comforting — perfect for any busy day

Ingredients
- 150g / 5.3 oz of Chinese broccoli
- 150g / 5.3 oz of beef, sliced thinly
- 3-4 tbsp of cooking oil
- 2 cloves of garlic, diced
- 1 tbsp of fish sauce
- 2 tsp of soy sauce
- 2 tsp of oyster sauce
- 1 tsp of dark soy sauce
-
1 cup / 200g of jasmine rice or 400g cooked rice
Directions
- Rinse one cup of rice a couple of times and drain well. Add 1.5 cups of water and place the pot into the rice cooker and let it cook while we are prepping the rest of the ingredients. If you don’t have a rice cooker, click here to learn how to cook rice over the stovetop.
- Gailan (Chinese broccoli) has thick stems, so quarter the stems lengthwise. Dice the stem part into small pieces, then roughly chop the leaves. Again, if you don’t have access to Chinese broccoli, western broccoli, broccolini, baby bok choy, or choy sum will work just as well.
- Cut the beef into a few thick strips, then slice them into thin pieces. We will not marinade the meat so you do want to use a tender cut, such as flank steak, sirloin or strip steak.
- Turn the heat to high and preheat the wok until smoking hot, which will take about 30 seconds. Add a big drizzle of oil. Toss in the diced gailan and stir quickly for a minute.
- Add the beef and some diced garlic. Stir until the meat changes color, which will take about 30 seconds.
- Season it with 1 tbsp of fish sauce, 2 tsp of soy sauce, 2 tsp of oyster sauce, and 1 tsp of dark soy sauce. Mix well and turn off the heat.
- The rice should be done cooking. Add it to the wok directly and mix thoroughly. Enjoy!
