5-Minute Crispy Shrimp Toast (So Good You'll Make It Again and Again)

Crispy, savory, and downright satisfying, this 5-minute shrimp toast recipe is fancy enough for a party and yet easy enough for a rushed morning breakfast. You will find yourself making it again and again.

Shrimp toast doesn’t sound like Chinese food at all. And you are right - it isn’t, strictly speaking. It was born in Hong Kong during the British colonial period, so it is a fusion creation. Later, it traveled to Western countries in the hands of immigrants and became a staple of Chinese takeout menus everywhere.

This 5-minute shrimp toast is crispy, savory, and downright satisfying, so simple and delicious that you will find yourself making it again and again. Traditionally, shrimp toast is deep-fried but for home cooking, pan-frying is lighter, quicker, and just as delicious. So, what are you waiting for? Grab some shrimp, smash them, and get toasting!

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Put the shrimp, garlic, and ginger into a zip lock bag and push out all the air. Use a rolling pin to smack for 2-3 minutes or until everything becomes smooth and sticky. Don't worry if some larger shrimp pieces remain - they add a nice bite.

  2. Open the bag and add soy sauce, oyster sauce, sweet paprika, ground black pepper, sesame oil, diced scallion, and minced carrot. Mix thoroughly.

  3. Cut off one corner of the zip-lock bag, squeeze the shrimp mixture onto the toast, and spread evenly. If you want to be fancy, feel free to sprinkle some sesame seeds or crushed nuts on top. If you are prepping for a party, quarter the toast into dainty triangles, and you will end up with perfect finger-sized appetizers that everyone loves.

  4. Preheat a frying pan thoroughly over medium heat. Add butter and pan fry the toast 2-3 minutes each side until golden brown.
